Channapatna Dolls and Toys – The World Famous Toys Of Karnataka

Channapatna toys are a unique form of wooden toys (and dolls) that are manufactured in the town of Channapatna in the Ramanagara district of the Karnataka state of India. This traditional craft is protected as a geographical indication (GI) under the World Trade Organization, administered by the Government of Karnataka. As a result of the popularity of these toys, Channapatna is known as Gombegala Ooru (toy-town) of Karnataka.

The origin of these toys can be traced to the reign of Tipu Sultan, who invited artisans from Persia to train the local artisans in the making of wooden toys. Bavas Miyan, the father of Channapatna toys, adopted the Japanese technology of toy making and helped the local artisans improve their art.

Traditionally, the work involved lacquering the wood of the Wrightia tinctoria tree, colloquially called Aale mara (ivory-wood). The craft has diversified over time, so in addition to the traditional ivory wood, other woods—including rubber, sycamore, cedar, pine, and teak—are now used. Manufacturing stages include procuring, seasoning, cutting the wood into the desired shapes, pruning and carving the toys, applying colors, and finally polishing the finished product. Vegetable dyes are used as colors to ensure that the toys and dolls are safe for children.

Channapatna makes a variety of dolls & toys including religious toys and dolls for daily life. Their specialization includes children’s learning toys like mathematical games and puzzles as well as movable toys like the rocking horse, rabbits, train engines, motorcycles, and cars. They also make colorful joker key chains and mini birds.

Channapatna toys are the pride of India and are popular all over the world for their vibrant designs and colors.
